Teenager arrested after pulling out gun during basketball game at South Carolina Jewish Community Center

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – According to an affidavit, a teenager was arrested last week after pulling out a gun during a basketball game at a Jewish community center in south Charlotte.

Leonard L. Guy Jr., 18, was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and resisting an officer.

The situation occurred on Thursday, July 18, around 5 p.m. in the gymnasium of the The founding of Shalom ParkThe center was temporarily sealed off during the incident.

The officer on the scene said a recreation center employee told him one of the players “pulled out a gun and pointed it in front of him.”

While speaking with that member, the officer said the suspect – later identified as Guy – walked past him and told him he was the one who pulled out the gun. The officer told Guy to stop and talk, but he refused and ran out of the lobby toward the parking lot.

The officer said he followed Guy and circled the area until he found him behind a synagogue.

“Due to the evidence that a firearm was present, I drew my weapon and gave the suspect loud verbal commands to lie on the ground,” the officer wrote. “The suspect initially complied, but then stood up after a few moments.”

From that point on, reports say, Guy ran away again, despite the officer again verbally ordering him to come down.

As Guy ran away, he dropped his school bag, which was later found by authorities. The officer’s affidavit said the bag had the number 23 and the name “Guy” on it, along with an East Mecklenburg High School eagle mascot. The bag and information helped police identify Guy as a suspect after speaking with East Mecklenburg’s school security officer and finding Guy on the online basketball roster.

This information eventually led to Guy’s arrest.

WBTV has reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to confirm if Guy is still a student at East Meck, but CMS said they cannot provide information on inquiries regarding current or former students.
