Cambridge Police Department Youth Academy visits Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit

The Cambridge Police Department Youth Academy visited our Explosive Disposal Ordinance Unit, also known as EOD, this summer. In a demonstration, EOD defuses a potential bomb using equipment that allows this to be done remotely. Sgt. EJ Frammartino explains how they use a high pressure water jet to remove the end cap. “The end cap is flipped off, the pipe is flipped over, the contents are emptied and you no longer have a pipe bomb.”

The EOD’s primary mission is to ensure the safety of citizens. All members undergo special training with the FBI to handle, transport and evaluate suspected explosive devices. Our explosives technicians conduct raids at public events such as festivals, graduations and visiting dignitaries, not only in Cambridge but throughout the region.

Youth Academy students like Isaiah Garmon and Miley Smejlik say they also learned more about police work in general. “It’s good to meet all these people, get to know some police officers and learn about police work,” Garmon said. “It humanizes them.” Both students are considering careers in public safety. “I see a good future in the police force and this gives me a head start,” Smejlik said.
