Woman convicted of pepper spray attack on shop owner in San Francisco’s SoMa in 2021

A jury in San Francisco has convicted a woman for a 2021 incident in which she attacked a store owner with pepper spray after violating then-current COVID-19 mask regulations, prosecutors said.

According to District Attorney Brooke Jenkins’ office, 25-year-old Sahra Bozorgmehr was found guilty of assault in connection with the Feb. 16, 2021, incident in the city’s South of Market.

“The jury’s verdict holds Ms. Bozorgmehr accountable for her actions and makes clear that the people of San Francisco will not tolerate violent incidents,” Jenkins said Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Bozorgmehr tried to enter a convenience store in the 100 block of Eighth Street without a mask. After the store owner told her she needed a mask, Bozorgmehr scratched the victim’s face and fled.

Bozorgmehr immediately tried to re-enter the store but was again turned away. Prosecutors said she then sprayed the store owner with pepper spray.

While the victim was incapacitated, Bozorgmehr was tackled to the ground by a shopper who had witnessed the attack and held until police arrived a few minutes later.

“COVID-19 has been a difficult time for all members of society. But none of its effects would have permitted violence against others and disregard for the law,” said Assistant District Attorney Ahmanda Lee.

Bozorgmehr’s sentencing is scheduled for August 9. She is currently at liberty.
