Weather warning until Saturday on the coast. Several centimetres of rain on the way.

Heavy rains are occurring in some drought-affected areas of Texas, including the northern Frio and Nueces River basins.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Weather warnings for Tuesday through Saturday. We are bringing these days to attention because we expect a 60% or greater chance of precipitation per day in the region. This amount of rain may interfere with normal daily activities, especially with regard to outdoor activities or driving conditions.

Rain is currently only scattered in the coastal region, but plentiful in the north. A stationary front has stalled precisely where rain is most needed: the northern end of the Frio and Nueces river basin. Abundant rain is good for drought relief, but it can also bring dangerous flash flooding, especially in the Texas Hill Country. Several flash flood warnings are in place, including for the Kerrville and Bandara areas.

This part of our watershed has experienced a long drought, and the rain will be very beneficial. Rain that is not absorbed by the soil can flow into the Frio and Nueces rivers and eventually into Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi.

Here’s a look at the latest rainfall estimates from Doppler radar over the basin. Lake levels have risen several tenths of an inch over the past week and month, and this week’s rain should help that trend continue.

There has been scattered rain in the Coastal Bend and we expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms in the region through Saturday.

The best chance for rain will be on Wednesday, when the Weather Forecast Center will move the slight flood threat over the coastal bend. Today, the focus of the flooding will be just north of us in the Hill Country. With heavy rains possible, flooding is possible any day this week, but especially on Wednesday.

Overall, the Gulf Coast in Central Texas is expected to receive the most rain over the next 5 to 6 days, with totals between 4 and 6 inches forecast. Much of the rest of South/Central Texas is expected to receive 2 to 4 inches.

It will not rain all day, every day, in every location. Some locations will be missed and it may only rain on some of the next 5 days. There will be a random distribution each day, with a tendency for most of the rain to occur near the coast.
