Motorcyclist killed in accident near I-485 in north Charlotte

The man was wearing a DOT-approved helmet but did not fit properly, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in north Charlotte Monday evening, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on West WT Harris Boulevard near Interstate 485 and Northlake Mall. When officers arrived on scene, they saw a 2020 Honda CR-V and a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle with major damage. The motorcyclist, identified as 21-year-old Bryan Alexander Gonzalez Barreras, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined that the driver of the CR-V was turning left from WT Harris Boulevard onto the I-485 on-ramp when the motorcycle crashed into the SUV at a high rate of speed. Barreras was wearing a DOT-approved helmet but was not properly fitted, CMPD said. The driver of the Honda and two passengers were not injured in the crash.

Speed ​​is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident. A toxicology report is pending. No charges have been filed at this time.
