Pit bull shot dead in dog attack in Staten Island Park: officials

STATEN ISLAND, NY (PIX11) – A pit bull was shot and killed Sunday in Great Kills Park in Staten Island following two dog attacks, according to the United States Park Police.

Visitors alerted park police that two dogs were running loose. Authorities say officers saw one of the dogs, both believed to be pit bulls, attack a visitor’s dog.


One of the officers was then bitten while attempting to stop the dog attack, according to park police. The other escaped pit bull lunged at another officer.

Two officers then shot at the dogs, hitting one of the pit bulls, according to authorities.

Officers managed to corral the pit bulls before New York City police intervened and tranquilized them, according to the Park Police. The two dogs were taken to an animal hospital.

According to authorities, another victim later contacted park police and said her dogs had been attacked in the same area earlier that morning.
