Hawley wants investigation into “dark money” funding campus protests

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate who is funding anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests at universities across the country.

“What we found out – thanks to the press – we found out that these college protests and riots against Jewish Americans demanding the elimination of the state of Israel, destroying property and threatening lives, these riots are being funded by Joe Biden’s biggest donors.” Hawley told Missourinet.

Hawley cited a Politico article that said the protests were being funded by groups and individuals supporting President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign.

“Like George Soros, like the Rockefeller Institute, I think – there’s a whole bunch of them, and they run the money through dark money groups so you can’t trace it,” he said. “It’s probably illegal. Under U.S. law, nonprofit organizations cannot be used to conceal activities designed to promote illegal behavior like these riots.”

Hawley has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to find out how many “dark money” groups are funding the protests and decide whether their tax-exempt status should be revoked.

A spokesman for the Open Society Foundations, of which Soros is founder and chairman, told Politico that it has “funded a wide range of U.S. groups that have advocated for the rights of Palestinians and Israelis and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Israel “.
