Galway man to be sentenced in October for sexually abusing teenage babysitter – Connacht Tribune

A Galway man is convicted in October of repeatedly sexually assaulting an underage girl who was looking after his young children.

The 54-year-old, whose name cannot be disclosed to protect the identity of the now 28-year-old woman, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault before the Central Criminal Court.

The complainant was between 16 and 17 years old at the time of the offences, which occurred between 1 June 2012 and February 2014.

In her victim statement, she described the man as a subhuman, a monster and a master manipulator who abused her in every way imaginable.

Prosecutors said the teenager often spoke to the man when he and his wife returned from an evening outing.

He stayed up, chatted with her and gave her alcohol.

She later told police that the man sexually assaulted her while she was sleeping on the couch while his wife and children slept upstairs.

There were also two occasions when he sexually harassed her in two different local bars after she happened to see him on an evening out.

The victim said the man went to great lengths to groom her and isolate her, made comments about her body and appearance, and found other ways to “get to her.”

The court heard that the man had previously been convicted of sexually abusing a younger child when he was a child himself and that that conviction was under appeal.

The case was adjourned until October 21 to allow time for reports to be prepared on the sex offender treatment the man is currently undergoing.
