“It was the worst”: Sam Smith remembers skiing accident and describes “terrible” damage

Sam Smith, the well-known singer and songwriter, recently spoke about a horrific skiing accident he experienced earlier this year. Smith described it as one of the hardest moments he has ever experienced in his life. This harrowing experience was shared on the Sidetracked with Annie and Nick podcast, which was released on July 18.

The accident occurred as Smith attempted to ski down a particularly challenging slope on his second day of skiing.

Sam Smith’s journey through injury: From despair to reflection

Looking back, Smith admitted they felt reckless, knowing how dangerous it is to tackle such challenging slopes. The consequences were serious: Smith tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a key ligament that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone.

Due to the severity of his injury, Smith had to be transported in a special blood bag after the accident. The pain was unbearable and he was unable to walk for a full month. He required a leg brace and a cane to get around, highlighting the significant impact on his daily life.

Smith explained in his own words that the anterior cruciate ligament is essential for jumping and locomotion, stressing that the damage is permanent. “It sits between the bones and helps you jump and hop around. It’s completely torn and I opted for non-surgical treatment, but I couldn’t walk on that leg for a month and it was horrible,” Smith continued.

Despite the severity of the injury, Smith initially decided against surgery. This decision meant they had to endure a month of immobility, pain and discomfort. Looking back on the experience, Smith talked about how it was the first time they had felt so physically limited. The pain was challenging and they also struggled with emotional issues such as anxiety and frustration. However, this period of immobility became an opportunity for personal growth and self-reflection, motivating them to make positive changes in their lives.

Aside from struggling with the injury, Smith used the experience to rethink her lifestyle. In particular, they made headlines when they replaced their old phone with a new one, symbolizing not only the practical need for a US number but also a fresh start in their personal lives.

From digital detox to personal renewal in the midst of recovery

Smith said the new phone helped them clean up their contact list by deleting old numbers, including those of exes. This was a conscious attempt to tidy up their personal lives and move forward without emotional baggage. In addition, Smith also did something big: they deleted social media apps from their new phone. They wanted to get away from all the noise on the internet and spend more time enjoying nature.

They talked about how they find peace in quiet moments, sitting on benches in parks and simply observing trees – a big change from their busy lives before. This move toward simplicity and deeper reflection shows that Smith wants to live a more balanced and thoughtful life.

As Smith continues to recover from his skiing injury, he is hopeful about the future. In addition to his physical recovery, he is also on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Fans and followers appreciate Smith not only for his music, but also for his strength and willingness to speak openly about his personal challenges.
