ATP Round-Up: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Off to Strong Start in Atlanta

Fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina hit 30 winners Monday in a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over France’s Arthur Cazaux in the first round of the Atlanta Open.

Davidovich Fokina held an 11-8 advantage in aces and saved all five break points he faced as he advanced. Cazaux committed 16 unforced errors, two fewer than Davidovich Fokina, for 15 winners.

Belgian David Goffin beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka beat Zachary Svajda 7-6 (4), 6-3.

General opening

Eighth-seeded Serbian Laslo Djere beat Czech Vit Kopriva 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the first round in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Djere held a 6-2 lead in aces and converted 3 of his 4 break points. Djere will next face Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, who won 6-2, 7-6 (6) against Austrian Joel Schwaerzler.

In other matches, German Yannick Hanfmann beat Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4; Indian Sumit Nagal beat Slovakian Lukas Klein 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3); and Nicolas Moreno De Alboran eliminated Argentina’s Andrea Collarini 6-4, 6-4.

Flavio Cobolli held a 16-5 advantage in winning shots as he won 6-2, 6-3 against Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the first round in Umag.

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro beat No. 7 seed Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego won a third-set tiebreak to beat Croatia’s Mili Poljicak 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (9). Sonego saved two match points.

In other matches, Serbian Dusan Lajovic beat Austrian Filip Misolic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Czech Jakub Mensik beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2. Croatian Matej Dodig also beat Frenchman Enzo Couacaud 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Marco Trungelliti beat Guido Andreozzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a battle between Argentinian players.
