Bartholomew County driver dies when truck leaves road and enters lake

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Indiana – A driver was found dead at the scene of a crash in Bartholomew County Monday afternoon after a truck went off the road and partially submerged in a lake.

Officers with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office responded to a lake in the 8000 block of W. Old Nashville Road around 3:43 p.m. after receiving reports that a truck was submerged in the water.

According to BCSO, a witness saw the truck collide with a mailbox on the north side of the road before the vehicle turned south and drove across the yard of a home in the area. The truck then struck a raised deck and a fence before traveling downhill, BCSO said. Eventually, part of the truck came to rest in the water next to a dock on the lakeshore.

Local residents came to assist the driver, who was pronounced dead by emergency responders at the scene shortly afterward. BCSO said preliminary information indicated the driver may have suffered a serious medical emergency that led to the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
