Seattle Mariners starting pitcher returns to form against Houston Astros

SEATTLE — Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo appeared to shake off any rust he had left in Sunday’s 6-4 win over the Houston Astros. Woo had pitched just once in July due to a stint on the injured list.

Woo pitched 5.2 innings and struck out five batters without allowing a walk. He allowed two earned runs on four hits.

“You have to give Bryan Woo credit for starting the game,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said in a postgame interview Sunday. “He was really good today. He hit fastballs, two-seams and four-seams, and he hit enough off-speed pitches to keep them honest.”

The sophomore pitcher out of Cal Poly has made a significant leap from his freshman year to this season. His main problem has been injuries.

From Aug. 8, 2023, until his start Sunday against Houston, Woo spent three stints on the IL totaling 74 days.

When Woo was on the field, he was excellent. He has a 2.54 ERA this season in 10 starts with 34 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.

He teams up with Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Bryce Miller to form one of the most appealing rotations in the entire league. Seattle is currently 53-48 and tied for first in the American League West.
