Man shot at Pryor Motel identified; suspect in custody

Pryor Creek Police have confirmed one man is dead and another is in custody following a fatal shooting at the Econo Lodge Motel in Pryor around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell, officers found a male victim named Aaron Gonzalez outside a motel room with two gunshot wounds to the upper body.

The suspect had driven away, but eyewitnesses provided a description of the vehicle. Mayes County officials later stopped the suspect’s vehicle near Chouteau and arrested James Leroy Jackson.

Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries. Police said he was from Mexico and was staying at the hotel for work reasons.

Cantrell said the preliminary investigation and eyewitness accounts indicate the victim was standing outside the motel when the suspect drove up in his car. Police say after a brief exchange between the two, shots were fired at the victim.

Jackson could be charged with several serious crimes, including first-degree murder. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
