Manhunt underway for fatal shooting after Amber Alert triggered

Detroit police are searching for four men following a fatal shooting that triggered an Amber Alert for a missing 1-year-old child early Sunday morning.

According to police, four unidentified men in a gray Dodge Durango are suspected of attacking a couple and shooting the man in the Compass and Littlefield area on Detroit’s west side.

“The suspects then took the child and fled the scene,” police wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.

The child has now been found safe and sound, but the suspects are still at large, authorities report.

According to the local newspaper Detroit Free Press, the Amber Alert was issued about three hours after the shooting on Saturday evening (around 10:09 p.m.) and was lifted after the child was found.

It is not known whether the family knew their attackers. Newsweek has reached out to Detroit Police for comment.

Authorities urge anyone who recognizes the vehicle or has information about the incident to contact the Detroit Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.

In a separate case, police are also searching for a man in connection with the fatal shooting of 23-year-old police officer Mohamed Said in Melvindale, less than 10 miles from Detroit. Said’s death was confirmed to the Detroit Free Press by his cousin Mazen Saeed.

“It’s hard because he’s my cousin, it feels like a movie now,” Saeed told the outlet. “I think the city should deploy more police and patrols to make the city safe for the entire population.”

The suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, according to a Facebook post from Melvindale Police.

The police chief of the neighboring city of Dearborn, Issa Shahin, mourned Said’s death in a Facebook post.

“I am deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic murder of Officer Mohamed Said,” Shahin wrote. “He was a good soul who proudly served the residents of Melvindale. I am praying for his family, friends and our police community as we mourn the loss of a brother.”

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Said’s death is another of more than 600 police officers in Michigan killed in the line of duty.

Melvindale Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 313-429-1070.
