Is Metro Atlanta’s Drought Over? – 95.5 WSB

I was very lucky last week, as it rained every day where I live between Monday 15th July and Sunday 21st July.

My unofficial rain gauge measured 7 inches of precipitation, but that’s not too far off! Below are the precipitation totals for metro Atlanta and northern Georgia.

A little over 2 weeks ago I noticed that Metro Atlanta was experiencing a sudden droughtwhich occurs during a period of unusually hot and dry conditions.

However, a cold front has stalled over metro Atlanta and daily rain showers have brought heavy rain to the region since last Monday.

Daily rain risks will continue through the end of the week, with a few locally heavy showers producing 2 to 4 inches of rain at a time.

Does this mean the drought is over?

It’s hard to say for sure, but all that heavy rain definitely helped!

Before the heavy rains arrived, NOAA’s Drought Ending and Improvement website indicated that up to 9 to 12 inches of rain were needed within 4 weeks to end the drought.

Half of the needed precipitation has already arrived in the Atlanta metro area, and the chance of rain remains high through the end of the week.

So I expect drought conditions to ease here in north Georgia, but we’ll know for sure Thursday morning when the latest information from the US Drought Monitor is released.
