Fatal collision following shooting in Newark’s North Ward under investigation

A serious incident involving a shooting and subsequent car crash occurred in Newark’s North Ward, prompting the Essex County District Attorney’s Office to launch an investigation.

The complex event occurred early Monday morning and left one person dead amid chaotic scenes.

The incident began at approximately 1:20 a.m. with the activation of a ShotSpotter, which alerted police to gunshots in the area of ​​179 Woodside Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found that several vehicles had been involved in an accident. A person was trapped in one of the vehicles and had suffered severe traumatic brain injury.

That person was later pronounced dead after being extricated by rescue workers. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that that person was shot.

Investigators found several cartridge cases at the scene of the accident, indicating that the accident was preceded by a violent altercation.

The situation became even more complicated when officials at Clara Maass Hospital notified police that a gunshot victim had been brought to the emergency room.

The vehicle transporting the victim fled the scene of the accident shortly after being dropped off.

Authorities are currently working to determine the motive for the shooting and the exact sequence of events that led to this fatal accident/shooting.
