Several dead in attack on nursing home – media reports – DW – 22.07.2024

A gunman shot dead five people in a nursing home in the Croatian town of Daruvar, about 130 kilometers east of the capital Zagreb, Croatian media reported on Monday.

News portal Index reported that five people died instantly, while others were injured and still receiving medical treatment. The suspect fled the scene, but police soon caught him in a cafe near the facility in the town of Daruvar, the report said.

No police officials were immediately available to confirm the shooting.

Rare occurrence

The Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List and regional television station N1 said the suspected gunman was a war veteran who killed his mother as well as other residents and staff,

During the collapse of Yugoslavia, the country fought a war of independence from 1991 to 1995.

However, shootings are rare in the Balkan state.
