Hurricane responsible for crime

The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl has led to a spike in crime in Houston. Andy Kahan is following the situation closely at Crime Stoppers.

“Right now, there are over 50 people who have been charged with breaking into a business during a disaster,” Kahan said, “which, from my perspective, is about as low as you can get.”

Given the low level, it is time for local leaders to step up and send a message to these criminals, especially after the murder of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Fernando Esqueda, who was ambushed by criminals.

“Because these violations occurred during a disaster, they carry harsher penalties,” Kahan told KTRH. “We have to set an example, we have to send a message.”

These crimes are considered misdemeanors punishable by prison sentences of 2 to 10 years. The storm should not be used as an excuse by local liberal leaders.
