Shooting near migrant shelter in New York leaves two dead and one injured: NYPD

Two men were killed and a third was fighting for his life Sunday night after two shootings occurred within minutes of each other near a Brooklyn migrant shelter, police and law enforcement sources said.

A man in his 30s was shot in the chest and arm at about 10:44 p.m. in a park near Flushing Avenue and Steuben Street outside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, police and sources said.

The victim was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

About seven minutes later, two men were shot outside the migrant shelter at 29 Ryerson Street, less than a quarter mile from the first shooting, the NYPD said.

A 47-year-old man was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim, believed to be in his 30s, was treated in critical condition at the hospital after being shot multiple times.

There appears to be a connection between the shootings and all of the victims are migrants, law enforcement sources said, citing preliminary information.

According to sources, detectives are investigating whether moped-riding members of the Venezuelan gang El Tren de Aragua were involved in the shootings.

As of Monday morning, no arrests had been made.

The Ryerson Street shelter was opened by the city in April and can accommodate up to 765 single adult migrants, BK Reader reported.
