New terror attack after army chief’s visit to Rajouri, Jammu is foiled

Rajouri/Jammu:

The Indian Army repelled a major attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district this morning. Initial reports suggest that a soldier was injured in the dawn attack on an army camp. Security forces launched a major search operation to track down terrorists after the attack, a defense spokesman said.

This comes amid a wave of terrorist attacks in the Jammu region, raising major security concerns.

The attack was reported less than 24 hours after Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited Jammu, where he discussed measures to deal with the dramatic increase in serious terrorist attacks on the army in the region, which was free of terrorism until a few years ago.

According to sources, a heavily armed terrorist group attacked an army camp in Gunda village. The firing started around 4 am and lasted for over an hour.

Although the attackers were driven away by heavy retaliatory strikes by the army, this is yet another brazen attack on the army in the region.

On Friday, a makeshift army camp at a school in Doda district was attacked with heavy gunfire and grenades. In the same area last week, four soldiers, including a captain, were killed after five soldiers were killed in an ambush in Kathua.

The army has already deployed additional troops, including special forces, to the Jammu region to tackle highly trained terrorists who have gained a foothold in the region and are carrying out one attack after another on the army.

In the last 32 months, 48 army soldiers have been killed in terrorist attacks in Jammu. After almost every attack, the terrorists manage to escape without suffering any casualties themselves.

Last week, the Prime Minister chaired the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security in view of the increasing number of terrorist attacks in Jammu. Earlier, the Prime Minister had asked the Army to use the full spectrum of its anti-terror capabilities to eliminate terrorists from the Jammu region.

The attacks occur despite massive cordon and search operations by security forces in various areas of Jammu.
