Florence man dies after kayak capsizes at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, rangers say

BREAKING NEWS. THIS IS WYFF NEWS 4 TODAY. IT SHOULDN’T BE HERE. I SHOULDN’T BE HERE. FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP APPEARS BEFORE A MICHIGAN CROWD IN HIS FIRST RALLY AFTER THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON HIM. AND PRISMA HEALTH ALSO WANTS TO CONTINUE OUTSIDE OF SOUTH CAROLINA WHERE YOUR CARE COULD GO NEXT. GOOD MORNING. I’M PEYTON FURTADO. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE WITH US ON YOUR SUNDAY MORNING. TODAY IS ANOTHER LIVE SUPER DOPPLER FOR IMPACT DAY. WE’VE HAD A FEW OF THEM THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF THE HEAT AND STORMS. AND HEY, IT DOESN’T STOP TODAY. WE HAVE METEOROLOGIST SYDNEY SULLIVAN IN THE STUDIO TO TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT. HOW SHOULD PEOPLE PREPARE FOR TODAY? SYDNEY? YES, IT’S ONE OF THOSE DAYS YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR RAIN GEAR READY. WE’LL BE CHECKING SOME SPOTATED RAIN AND STORMS. ACTUALLY ANYTIME OF THE DAY, BUT ESPECIALLY AS WE MOVE INTO THE AFTERNOON, WE’RE SEEING SOME RAIN THIS MORNING, AND THAT’S ALSO BRINGING WITH IT SOME LOW CLOUD COVER AND SOME WIDESCREEN FOG STARTING TO DEVELOP, ESPECIALLY IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. SO LESS THAN A HALF A MILE TO CULLOWHEE. VISIBILITY TOWARDS UNION, GAFFNEY, RUTHERFORDTON. ALSO SEEING SOME WIDESCREEN FOG STARTING TO DEVELOP. ALSO WE’RE SEEING SOME RAIN AND STORMS MOVING THROUGH OUR AREA AS WE’RE LOOKING AT IT. WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA IS MOSTLY DRY. THERE IS A BREAK OF RAIN AND PRETTY SPLASHES MOVING TO FRANKLIN AND AGAIN TO WALHALLA. THE REST OF US IS DRY BUT IT COULD STILL FEEL A LITTLE HUMID OUTSIDE. We have a humid air mass that is forecast to hold close to the forecast today through most of next week. So even though we’ve had a break from the high temperatures of last week, it’s still going to be a little muggy right now. Temperatures are in the 18-20s Celsius range and over the next 12 hours our temperatures will still climb a few degrees below average, reaching a high of 28 degrees. AGAIN, THERE WILL BE SOME SPOTS OF RAIN AND STORMS, BUT I EXPECT IT TO REMAIN FOR THE MOST PART FROM LATE MORNING TO EARLY AFTERNOON. YOU’LL SEE A LITTLE MORE CLOUD COVER AND THEN THOSE SPOTS OF RAIN AND STORMS WILL START TO COME BACK INTO THE FORECAST IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. BUT WE’LL BE LOOKING AT THE LATEST TIME OF THE STORMS VERY SOON. AND WHEN WE FINALLY SEE A LITTLE MORE SUNSHINE BACK INTO THE FORECAST, PEYTON, THANKS, SYDNEY, WE HAVE SOME BREAKING NEWS FOR THIS MORNING. THE PICKENS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING. DEPUTIES TELL US THEY ARE RESPONDING TO THIS AREA WITH THE ROLLING STAGE IN CENTRAL WITH ZERO VISIBILITY THAT YOU CAN SEE RIGHT ON YOUR SCREEN. THAT’S ALL THE INFORMATION WE HAVE AT THIS TIME. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY STILL A DEVELOPING STORY. SO WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATE ON AIR AND ONLINE AS MORE INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE AND IN A COMMITMENT TO FINISHING THE YEAR 2020 FOR FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP BACK ON THE CAMPAIGN A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AFTER HE SURVIVED AN ASSAULT. TRUMP WAS CAMPAIGNING IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, WITH VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND OHIO SENATOR JD VANCE AT HIS SIDE. THE LARGE WHITE BANDAGE AROUND HIS RIGHT EAR HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A SMALLER BEIGE BANDAGE. IT IS ONLY BY THE GRACE OF ALMIGHTY GOD THAT I STAND BEFORE YOU. THAT’S TRUE. I SHOULDN’T BE HERE. TRUMP’S SPEECH REPEATING SIMILAR THEMES WHEN HE ACCEPT THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL LAST THURSDAY AND NEW DETAILS ARE EMERGING ABOUT FRIDAY’S PHONE CALL BETWEEN FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP AND UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY. ZELENSKY’S SPEAKER SAYS THE TWO HAD A GOOD TALK AND TRUMP TOLD ZELENSKY NOT TO BELIEVE WHAT HE CALLS IS FAKE NEWS. IT’S POSSIBLE. RE-ELECTION WOULD BENEFIT RUSSIA. ZELENSKY TOLD TRUMP NOT TO BELIEVE LEADERS WHO TRIED TO JUSTIFY RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN’S ACTIONS AND SAID THERE WERE, QUOTE, NO EXCUSES. ZELENSKY’S SPEAKER ALSO SAID THE TWO HAVE AGREED TO MEET JOINTLY, AND PRESIDENT BIDEN SAID HE LOOKS FORWARD TO RETURNING TO THE CAMPAIGN NEXT WEEK, EVEN THOUGH MORE DEMOCRATS PUBLICLY CALLING ON HIM ON FRIDAY TO QUIT THE 2024 CAMPAIGN. BIDEN’S CAMPAIGN OFFICE RELEASED A STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT DESCRIBING HIS PLANS TO RESUME HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN NEXT WEEK. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THIS WEEK’S REPUBLICAN CONVENTION, DEMONSTRATIONS HELD A “PASS THE TORCH” RALLY IN FRONT OF THE WHITE HOUSE ON SATURDAY, CALLING ON PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN TO GET OUT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE. LISTEN. HEY, HEY, HO HO. THANKS, JOE. IT’S TIME TO GO. HEY, HEY, THEY PRAISED BIDEN’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS WHILE HIS WAS IN OFFICE, BUT SAID IT WAS TIME TO LOOK FOR A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS. ORGANIZERS SAY ANOTHER TRUMP PRESIDENCY WOULD THREATEN THEIR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS. THEY CARRY SIGNS THAT READS, “PASSED THE TORCH, SAVED THE PLANET AND DEMOCRACY, DEFEATED MAGA.” LISTEN, PEOPLE ARE GETTING OLD, RIGHT? IT LITERALLY HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US HERE, RIGHT? YES. IF WE ARE FORTUNED TO LIVE LONG AND FULFILLED LIFE LIKE BIDEN, WE ALL COME TO A POINT WHERE, TO USE A PHRASE, WE DON’T SPEAK AS SMOOTHLY AS WE USED TO. WE DON’T DEBATE AS WELL AS WE USED TO. PRESIDENT BIDEN WAS NOT IN THE WHITE HOUSE AT THIS TIME. HE IS HOME IN DELAWARE WHERE HE IS RECOVERING FROM COVID, AND PRESIDENT BIDEN’S PHYSICIAN, DR. KEVIN O’CONNOR, HAS ISSUE A NEW LETTER ON THE PRESIDENT’S CONDITION AS HE RECOVERS FROM COVID. ACCORDING TO DR. O’CONNOR, PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS TAKEN HIS SIXTH DOSE OF PAXLOVID. THIS IS A PILL TAKEN TO TREAT COVID-19 AND PREVENT SYMPTOMS FROM WORSEEN. DOCTOR CONFIRMS PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS VARIANT KP 2.3, WHICH THE CDC AND CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON HAVE SAID CAUSES ABOUT A THIRD OF NEW INFECTIONS IN THE U.S. LEE DIED AT AGE AFTER A BATTLE WITH PANCREATIC CANCER. THE TEXAS DEMOCRATIC ANNOUNCED HER CANCER DIAGNOSIS LAST MONTH. JACKSON LEE HAS BEEN A REPRESENTATIVE SINCE 1995 AND LEAVES HER LEGACY AS A LEGISLATIVE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS PROVISIONS INCLUDING THE JUNETEENTH NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY ACT, THE SENTENCING REFORM ACT OF 2015 AND THE GEORGE FLOYD LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST AND INTEGRITY ACT. SHE HAS ALSO SERVED ON THE JUDICIAL, DOMESTIC SECURITY AND BUDGET COMMITTEES, AND PRISMA HEALTH IS EXPANDING OUTSIDE SOUTH CAROLINA. THE HEALTH CARE GROUP SAYS IT HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED NEGOTIATIONS WITH BLOUNT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN TENNESSEE. THAT’S ACCORDING TO OUR NBC PARTNER. THIS COMES AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE BLOUNT COUNTY COMMISSION, WHICH ON THURSDAY UNANIMOUSLY PASSED A RESOLUTION APPROVING A LETTER OF INTENT IF THE DEAL PASSES REGULATORY APPROVALS AND BECOMES FINAL. PRISMA SAYS BLOUNT MEMORIAL COULD JOIN AS LATER THIS YEAR. AND JUST A REMINDER THIS MORNING: YOU NOW HAVE TO DIAL THREE ADDITIONAL DIGITS BEFORE MAKING THOSE LOCAL CALLS. AS THE POPULATION GROWS, THERE IS A NEW AREA CODE IN THE TOWN. IT’S 8 TO 1. IN ADDITION TO YOUR NORMAL EIGHT, SIX FOR YOUR CURRENT AREA CODE WILL NOT CHANGE, BUT IF YOU GET A NEW PHONE NUMBER AFTER AUGUST 19TH, YOU CAN GET AN 821 NUMBER. KEEP IN MIND
