Max Verstappen criticises Lewis Hamilton as he gives detailed verdict on Hungarian GP collision

Max Verstappen believed Lewis Hamilton was responsible for the collision at the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix – but the Briton himself described it as a “racing accident”.

The two collided as Verstappen attempted to overtake Hamilton at the first corner and move into third place, but Verstappen blocked and crashed into the side of the Mercedes.

The Dutchman then overtook the Mercedes with his car and was perhaps lucky enough to be able to continue the race and finish fifth.

Verstappen was called to the race control after the race because of the incident. No investigation was launched against Hamilton.

But the reigning drivers’ world champion believed Hamilton was responsible for the incident.

He told Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes: “I tried a full-on move but right in the braking zone, when I was already locked on the move, it kept pulling to the right.

“If I hadn’t turned when braking straight ahead, I would have hit him.

“At some point, yes, of course I lose grip because it always turns to the right.

“People have always made a big deal about what happened in Austria, but that concerns the first movement and then you just brake straight ahead, you keep the bike completely straight.

“I had the feeling that it didn’t happen during the first maneuver, but afterwards in the braking zone. He keeps turning further to the right, which is something you can’t do when someone is engaged on the inside.

“That’s why I blocked, otherwise we would have collided anyway because he would have turned into me. I tried a maneuver that was full throttle. I don’t think I braked too late, but we’ll look into it.”

Hamilton, on the other hand, felt he had left enough space and if Verstappen had been “under control, he would have passed”.

He said: “I think it was a racing accident.

“In the end, he was much faster. He shot the ball, I moved a little to defend, but I left enough space inside.”

“He blocked and then couldn’t turn, so he took a different trajectory and grazed my wheel. If he had been in control, he would have gotten past.”
