Max Verstappen learns his fate as race officials complete their investigation into Lewis Hamilton’s accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen escaped a penalty for his collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix because race control was of the opinion that “no driver was primarily at fault”.

It was an eventful race from the start for the Dutchman after he had to give back second place to Lando Norris after overtaking him off the track in the first corner.

His frustration boiled over several times on the team radio during the race, as he seemed agitated in the cockpit.

After Hamilton beat him twice, Verstappen was able to catch up with his rival in the final stages and seemed well on his way to third place.

But during a lunge on the inside of the first corner, he blocked and was thrown into the air after Hamilton touched his left rear tire.

As a result of the collision, Verstappen fell to fifth place behind Charles Leclerc. After the race, race control investigated the incident.

Some experts had expected Verstappen to receive a penalty because Rosberg felt the Red Bull driver had made a mistake.

Hamilton dismissed it as a “racing accident,” while Verstappen pointed the finger at the seven-time world champion for turning in front of him.

Race control ultimately considered that no penalty was necessary for either driver, but stated that Hamilton “could have done more to avoid the collision.”

“On approaching the first corner, both car 44 (Hamilton) and car 1 (Versatppen) overtook car 23 (Alex Albon),” the verdict said.

“Car 44 returned to the racing line before the braking zone and began to turn into Turn 1.

“Car 1 approached the corner faster than in previous laps (due to DRS) and braked in the same place as before.

“The driver of Car 1 argued that Car 44 changed direction while braking.

“The driver of Car 44 stated that he was simply following his normal racing line (which was confirmed by examination of video and telemetry data from previous laps).

“It was clear that Car 1 locked both front wheels on the approach to the first corner before impact, but missed the normal cornering line for a typical overtaking manoeuvre.

“The driver of Car 44 stated that it was a racing accident, while the driver of Car 1 argued that it was a change of direction while braking.

“Race control does not consider this to be a typical case of a ‘change of direction under braking’, although we conclude that the driver of car 44 could have done more to avoid the collision.

“We therefore assume that no driver is primarily to blame and have decided not to take any further action.”
