His sexual abuse of the two young girls began about 10 years ago, said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago. Both girls were under 13 years old.

Police say Schmitt sexually abused the girls in several locations in Monmouth County, including his home in Eatontown.

An investigation into Schmitt’s activities was launched in September 2020 by Christopher Casson, a detective with the Eatontown Police Department. That was when a relative of the two girls first reported the abuse to authorities.

Schmitt was arrested in October 2020 and stood trial in 2024, with both victims testifying.

A Monmouth County jury ultimately convicted him of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, attempted second-degree aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and child endangerment.
