Police investigate shooting in Holts Summit

One person was injured early Sunday when multiple shots were fired in a parking lot in Holts Summit.

Shortly after 1 a.m., a city police officer on patrol heard a series of gunshots near the Holts Summit Lions Club at 116 E. Hillcrest Ave. When he arrived, he saw several people fleeing the area, a police department news release said.

No victims were found at the scene, but a vehicle in the parking lot had several bullet holes, police said. The owner of the vehicle said she was at the Lions Club attending a private party when she heard gunshots.

Several buildings in the area also appeared to have been damaged by gunfire.

A resident reported to police that a man who had been shot in the foot was running through his backyard.

Additional law enforcement officers from the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrived to assist with the incident.

Police said they found approximately 11 pistol cartridges and 36 rifle cartridges in the Lions Club parking lot, along with several bullets, bullet fragments and a small amount of blood.

While officers were searching the scene, they were notified of a possibly related incident that occurred on U.S. 63 outside of Holts Summit, the release said. Police also learned that a man was admitted to a Columbia hospital with a gunshot wound around the same time. A Holts Summit officer made contact with the injured man, but he reportedly refused to cooperate or provide any information.

The investigation is ongoing and Holts Summit Police are asking anyone with information to contact the police department at 573-896-4911.
