Employer fraud alert due to fraud with new payment requests

JUNEAU — Employers in Alaska have reported receiving fraudulent emails or collection letters asking them to call the phone number provided on the notice and/or make payment to a third party.

In the most recent scam, the dollar amount in a legitimate Employment Security Tax lien claim was listed in a notice, the employer was told to call the number provided in the letter by a certain date and threatened with possible foreclosure.

Employment Security Tax does not hire third parties to seize property or collect missing quarterly contribution reports or tax payments from Alaska employers. This is a reminder to carefully review the notices you receive. Legitimate notices are from the State of Alaska and include a valid address and phone number.

If you are unsure about the authenticity of a notice, call the Employment Security Tax toll-free at (888) 448-3527 or contact your local tax office to speak with a representative.
