CDC: Deadly listeria outbreak linked to sausage products

Corrections and clarifications: An earlier version of this story misstated the location of a death related to the outbreak. One death was reported in New Jersey.

Two people have died and 28 others have been hospitalized in the United States following an outbreak of listeria infection in several states traced back to sliced deli meat, federal health officials said Friday.

A dozen Midwestern and East Coast states have recently had people infected with listeria, a bacteria that potentially causes foodborne illness and is particularly a problem during pregnancy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a news release. The deaths occurred in Illinois and New Jersey. New York had seven cases, the most of any state, CDC data showed.
