USA: Newly married man of Indian descent shot dead in front of his wife during “road rage”

A 29-year-old newly married man of Indian descent was shot dead in front of his wife in the US state of Indiana. The suspected perpetrator was initially arrested at the scene but later released. He stated that he may have acted in “self-defense” because the victim was carrying a gun when he confronted the other driver in a pickup truck.

“After further investigation and consultation with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, the individual was released,” a police spokesman said.

According to police and media reports, the incident occurred as Gavin Dasaur was walking home with his Mexican wife. Indianapolis Police Department (IMPD) Officer Amanda Hibschman said officers responded to a report that a person had been shot at an intersection in southeast Indianapolis just after 8 p.m. last week on July 16.

Arriving officers said they found a man on the ground in the middle of the street with at least one gunshot wound. The man’s wife identified the shooting victim. “I held him as he bled to death and waited for the ambulance,” said the victim’s widow, Viviana ZaMora. The Indianapolis Star.

A cellphone video taken by another driver at the scene shows Dasaur getting out of his car at the intersection. He appears angry and shouts at the pickup truck driver: FoxNews reported.

A gun is clearly visible in Dasaur’s right hand. As he approaches the driver’s side of the pickup truck, he bangs on the pickup truck’s door with the gun in his hand. He then takes the gun in his left hand and simultaneously raises his right hand to the pickup truck’s window.

The driver of the pickup truck reacts by firing three times. Dasaur immediately falls to the ground. The gunman did not leave his vehicle once during the confrontation, which lasted only seven seconds.

Dasaur, reportedly from Agra in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and Viviana ZaMora were married on June 29, just over two weeks before his death. Local WTHR reports said witnesses told police the shooting occurred because of an incident of road rage between the Chevy driver and Dasaur, who was driving a black Honda.

IMPD said the investigation into the shooting and the alleged incident of driving aggression is ongoing. Dasaur’s wife condemned the shooting and mourned her husband’s death. “He was a hard-working man who always tried to help others and who wanted to give the world to me and his family,” she told the local news agency.
