Israeli military strikes Houthi targets in Yemen in response to Tel Aviv attack – POLITICO

The Health Ministry in Sanaa told the AP news agency that, according to preliminary figures, 80 people were injured in the attacks in Hodeidah, most of them suffering severe burns.

On Sunday morning, the Israeli military said it had shot down a rocket fired from Yemen before it entered Israeli airspace. It added that sirens had been activated in Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat “because it was suspected that shrapnel had fallen”.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu condemned a ruling by the UN’s top court on Friday that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories was illegal. The non-binding opinion called for an end to the occupation and an immediate halt to settlement construction. It is an unprecedented condemnation of Israeli rule over the territories it conquered 57 years ago.

Netanyahu said the territories are part of the Jewish people’s historic homeland, but the magnitude of the decision could influence international opinion and fuel efforts to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state, AP reported.

The judges cited a long list of policies, including the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the exploitation of the territory’s natural resources, the annexation and imposition of permanent control over land, and discriminatory policies against Palestinians. All of these measures violated international law, the ruling said.

The court ruled that Israel had no right to sovereignty in the territories, was violating international law prohibiting the violent acquisition of territories, and was hindering the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
