UPDATE: Pedestrian killed on I-65 Saturday morning

CULLMAN, Alabama. – A car crash involving two pedestrians left one of them dead. The accident occurred on Saturday, July 20, at around 2:30 a.m.

Alabama police said pedestrian Madelyn R. Guerra, 20, of Adelphi, Maryland, was sitting in the roadway and was fatally injured when she was struck by a 2022 Toyota Highlander driven by Julie B. Austel, 40, of Fortville, Indiana.

Guerra was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second pedestrian, Tierra R. Cathcart, 19, of Anniston, Alabama, was also struck by the Toyota. Police said Cathcart was injured and taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

The accident occurred on Interstate 65 near Alabama Highway 69, about 6 miles south of Cullman in Cullman County.

No further information is available as officers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue their investigation.
