Trump assassination: New details from FBI investigation into attempted murder come to light

HBO host Bill Maher doesn’t believe that God’s hand saved former President Donald Trump from an assassin’s bullet last week, saying those who believe that are almost making him a “demigod.”

In the closing monologue of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host mocked Trump supporters who had claimed that the assassination of former President Trump was prevented by an act of God, urging them to open their eyes and stop “magic thinking.”

“It’s enough to interpret every event as a DM (direct message) from heaven,” Maher said, chiding religious Trump supporters in the segment.

Maher condemned the attempted murder at the beginning of his broadcast, as he did shortly after the traumatic event. On Friday, he told his HBO audience: “You should be just as angry about this as if the candidate you like had been shot.”

He also criticized the U.S. Secret Service for failing to prevent the incident, saying, “They should also be angry that the Secret Service allowed a kid with a sniper rifle and a rangefinder to go through the metal detectors. What? The TSA once approached me for a bottle of Visine.”

Later in the show, however, Maher criticized the way some religious Trump fans characterized his assassination attempt.

The segment, titled “In God We Lust,” began with the moderator stating, “Ever since the bullet intended for Donald Trump missed him last Saturday, Republicans have been indulging in an orgy of magical thinking, saying things like, ‘Trump is wearing the armor of God.'”

He cited several conservatives and influential Trump supporters who claimed that God protected the former president, including Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who himself was the victim of an assassination attempt in 2017.

Maher read Scalise’s post about Trump’s shooting, which said, “Miracles happened yesterday. And I believe God’s hand was in that, too.” The host then joked about how God handled Scalise’s shooting compared to Trump’s: “Steve got shot, too, but God was having a bad day. And the bullet missed his ear and went into his spleen.”

He warned his followers not to attach any religious significance to Trump, continuing: “America does not need a demigod. From the pharaohs to Julius Caesar to Hirohito, many cultures have tried it – the earthly being who is simultaneously divine or god-like. And it never ends well.”
