Saguaro High School left-handed pitcher Cam Caminiti signs with Atlanta Braves for $3.5 million

Scottsdale Saguaro left-hander Cam Caminiti’s meteoric rise in baseball reached another major milestone Friday.

Caminiti was signed for the full value of the 24th overall pick at $3,556,300 by the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB’s Jim Callis.

Dominic Caminiti, Cam’s father, confirmed to The Republic that his son signed Friday and will be in Atlanta on Monday.

Caminiti, who was reclassified from 2025 to 2024 last summer to enter this year’s Major League Baseball draft, had a breakout senior season, leading Saguaro to the 4A state title.

The Gatorade and Arizona Republic high school baseball player of the year was invited to the draft in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday, becoming the youngest player ever selected in the first round at 17. He turns 18 next month.

Dominic Caminiti said that on Tuesday, Cam will meet with team management, do media interviews and attend the Braves game that night.

Dominic said that on Wednesday, Cam will report to the Braves’ spring training facility in North Port, Fla., where he will begin working out.

“The Braves hope to promote Cam to Low-A by the end of August, where he can play for the Augusta GreenJackets, before the season ends on Sept. 8,” Dominic said.

The 6-foot-2, 186-pound Caminiti, who signed with LSU in November, had a fastball that hit 98 mph last season. Add in a great changeup and slider, and he becomes the first high school left-handed pitcher selected in this year’s draft.

He went 9-0 in 10 appearances, striking out 119 batters and allowing 14 walks in 52.2 innings, finishing with a 0.93 ERA. He allowed just two hits and struck out 11 batters in Saguaro’s 2-1 win over Oro Valley Canyon del Oro in the 4A championship game.
