One dead, two injured in shooting near Lowell temple – NBC Boston

Authorities are combing the scene of a fatal shooting outside a Hindu temple in Lowell that interrupted a weekend-long religious celebration.

One man was killed and two others were injured in the incident, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Chief Greg Hudon.

Authorities said they found people suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived at the scene at around 4:53 a.m.

According to police, a 43-year-old Lowell man and a 34-year-old man were taken to the hospital, where the 43-year-old was later pronounced dead.

A 26-year-old woman was also injured and had to be taken to hospital herself, according to authorities.

The entire parking lot behind a shopping center on Middlesex Street in Lowell has been cordoned off as authorities focus their investigation on several abandoned cars, bottles of alcohol and a pile of abandoned clothing.

According to police, a group had gathered in the parking lot before the shooting when a physical altercation broke out.

Investigators spent hours taking photos and placing evidence markers on the ground this morning. Meanwhile, dozens of people turned up for a three-day religious celebration held at the temple for people from a particular village in India.

There is no information that the gathering was connected with the temple.

About a thousand people are expected to attend the celebrations today and tomorrow. The police eventually diverted them around the crime scene so that they could continue their program.

“There may be a delay, but the event will go on all day. There will be dances, performances, prayers and everything,” said Ravi Patel.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
