WATCH: Pilot escapes unharmed after bizarre helicopter incident

HEGINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KMID/KPEJ) – A helicopter crash is under investigation after a pilot spraying fields in Schuylkill County Friday afternoon.

More than 400 people in Hegins Township were without power because of the accident, including the owner of the farm who witnessed the incident.

According to reports, the helicopter circled over the Miller family’s corn field Friday afternoon, spraying the crops in Hegins Township along Wood Lane before quickly descending and apparently diving directly into the field.

“You just heard a pop, it hit the cable and the cable broke, and then he had it pretty much under control until he was almost down, and then it went sideways, and then the rotor hit, and after that it was over,” said Bruce Miller, owner of Miller’s Farm.

The helicopter hit a power line before crashing into the cornfield, causing a power outage that affected hundreds of people in the area. The pilot was the only person on board and was not injured.

“I went downstairs to see if he was OK and to get him out. He was fine. Not even a scratch, he said, no scratches, nothing, he was lucky,” Miller said.

Miller said a new fungus was threatening his crops and this was the first time anyone had to spray the 20-acre farm.

“The guy was really good. He sprayed everything from the valley to here and did a good job, but this one time I don’t know what happened,” Miller explained.

Miller said it was terrifying to witness what he called a bizarre accident. “It was overwhelming. It’s not something anyone wants to experience,” Miller added.

Power has now been restored and the FAA will investigate the crash.
