  • Drone flies close to US embassy in Tel Aviv

Deadly drone attack in Tel Aviv under investigation

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL—A drone attack in Tel Aviv on Friday killed one man and injured at least ten others, prompting an investigation into the incident and possible security lapses.

The drone struck near the US embassy.

The attack was orchestrated by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for Israeli actions in Gaza. Houthi spokesman Yahya Sare’e said a new type of drone was used, designed to evade Israeli interception systems, and vowed to continue attacks in response to Israeli military actions in Gaza.

The incident marks the first successful drone attack on Tel Aviv, Israel’s economic hub, by the Houthis. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari identified the drone as an Iranian-made Samad-3, launched from Yemen.

During the attack, a second drone was intercepted by Israeli forces outside the country’s eastern borders. Following the incident, the Israeli military announced the strengthening of its air defenses and an increase in air patrols on the borders.

An Israeli military official said the drone was detected but not intercepted due to human error, and confirmed it was equipped with a warhead that caused the explosion in an apartment building. No further details on the drone’s payload were immediately available.
