Murder investigation underway in Lowell – Boston News, Weather, Sports

LOWELL, MASS. (WHDH) – A homicide investigation was launched in Lowell on Saturday after an apparent shooting left one person dead, according to sources.

The investigation apparently focused on the parking lot in front of the Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple on Middlesex Street.

As of about 9:00 a.m., investigators were still on site and took photos as part of their investigation.

According to sources, it is unclear whether anyone else was hit by the gunfire besides the person killed. However, the incident does not appear to be connected to the Hindu temple.

Witnesses said the parking lot is often used for nighttime gatherings because it is a large, empty space at night.

Witnesses reported that people also gathered at night in the parking lot of a car wash across the street.

Several cars were stopped inside the crime scene cordon on Saturday morning. At 9 a.m., a handful of cars were still in the area.

A large religious gathering was planned at the temple on Saturday, with thousands of people expected to attend. Some arrived on Saturday morning but were unable to enter the parking lot, which was still cordoned off.

Further information was not initially available.
