Listeria outbreak in sausage products in the USA in 11 states: 2 deaths, 28 hospitalizations

A listeria outbreak linked to sliced ​​deli meat has resulted in two deaths and 28 hospitalizations in the Midwest and East Coast, federal health officials said.

People have reportedly become ill from bacteria that can cause foodborne illness, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Friday. The cases investigated were between May 29 and July 5.

One person died in Illinois, the only reported case in that state, and another person died in New York, the state with seven cases in this U.S. outbreak, according to CDC data.

Listeria is especially concerning for pregnant women, people over 65, or people with weakened immune systems. Listeria can cause miscarriages in pregnant women. Others can also become infected with listeria, but rarely become seriously ill, according to the CDC.
