Body of pregnant Georgia teenager found by father; ex-boyfriend arrested

Police in north-central Georgia are investigating the murder of a pregnant 16-year-old girl whose body was discovered by family in a wooded area this week.

Relatives found the teenager dead early Monday morning in Loganville, a city about 35 miles east of Atlanta, and on Tuesday police said they had arrested the girl’s 17-year-old ex-boyfriend in connection with the case.

The Gwinnett County Police Department, the lead agency handling the case, identified the victim as Mia Campos.

According to police, Campos’ family called 911 around 1 a.m. Monday to report that they had found her body in a rural wooded area just off a road.

“I found my daughter lying face down,” the teenager’s father, Edward Campos, told WANF-TV. “It was hard. I knew something was wrong – her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby.”

Family used cell phone to find pregnant teenager Mia Campos

The family told arriving officers that Campos left the house with an unknown person on Sunday evening, police wrote in a press release.

“When she did not return home, her family used a cell phone app to find her body,” police wrote.

Based on the initial evidence found at the crime scene, investigators were unable to determine Campos’ cause of death.

Autopsy revealed that Mia Campos was murdered

Detectives, crime scene investigators and the county coroner arrived at the scene and spoke with witnesses.

After an autopsy performed Tuesday, a medical examiner concluded that Campos’ cause of death was homicide.

Police did not disclose how the teenager was killed; the motive for the murder remains under investigation.

Mia Campos’ ex-boyfriend arrested

On Wednesday, police said investigators had arrested Campos’ ex-boyfriend for making false statements to a police officer.

Police did not say whether he is the father of the victim’s child or whether he is suspected of murder.

USA TODAY is not naming the ex-boyfriend because he is a minor.
