13 years of investigative reports and videos published

A day after Katelyn Markham’s ex-fiancé, John Carter, was convicted for his role in her death, the Butler County District Attorney’s Office shared previously unreleased evidence with WLWT. These accounts and interviews are recordings the public might have seen had the case gone to trial. One of the videos shows Carter yelling and cursing at his current wife. “Yes, you provoked me (expletive),” he yelled. “I want you to stop acting like a (expletive) every (expletive) day.” Another video provided to WLWT is an interview with a friend of Katelyn’s who told investigators Carter had hit on her just months after Katelyn’s disappearance. “He had mentioned he had feelings for me … three or four months after the fact,” she said. “I was shocked. It really blindsided me. I had to distance myself from him in that moment because it felt wrong.” Carter reported Katelyn missing from her Fairfield townhouse in August 2011. Her remains were found nearly two years later in Cedar Grove, Indiana. Carter was charged with murder in 2013 and eventually pleaded to a lesser charge of manslaughter. A Butler County inmate who met Carter in jail after his arrest also spoke to investigators. The inmate claimed Carter admitted to him that he killed Katelyn. He said they got into an argument. He said before he knew it, he had pushed her to the ground. He was on top of her, choking her, and after choking her, he said he panicked and didn’t know what to do. He wanted to call the police. He didn’t want to call the police. He said he made it look like a suicide, so he slit her wrists,” the inmate said. Although the inmate gave police specific details, it’s not clear how credible his account was. Detectives gave him a lie detector test, and the report says it “indicated deception.” He may not have been telling the truth. Another report obtained by WLWT describes what one of Katelyn’s neighbors said she heard coming from Katelyn’s townhouse the night she was last seen alive. The neighbor told detectives she woke up in the middle of the night to a “bang or screech” and heard something hitting the wall. She said she also heard “muffled dialogue” that may have been the words “no, no.” The documents show Carter failed lie detector tests conducted by the Indiana State Police and FBI, and also failed a voice stress analysis conducted by Fairfield Police.
