Bellport woman charged with hit-and-run that killed volunteer firefighter

A Bellport woman is facing charges in connection with an alleged hit-and-run accident last month that left a 22-year-old volunteer firefighter dead, prosecutors said.

According to authorities, Maria Guallpa-Bonilla struck Christopher Hlavaty as he was riding his motorcycle near Rider Avenue. He died that same evening.

According to officials, Guallpa-Bonilla had a permit but no driver’s license at the time of the crash.

If convicted, she faces up to seven years in prison, authorities say.
