Trump’s endless RNC speech almost cost Stephen Colbert his life

“I come to you now on the fourth night of the Republican National Convention,” Stephen Colbert began his great Late Show Thursday night. “We’re live, but after watching this speech, I’m dead inside.”

He was referring to Donald Trump’s 93-minute speech, which dragged on so much that Colbert’s live show had to be delayed until 1 a.m. Eastern Time instead of the usual 11:35 p.m.

“Trump gave the longest convention speech ever,” said Colbert. “When they chanted ‘four more years,’ he obviously thought they meant this speech.”

Colbert gave his viewers a brief overview of Trump’s speech, in which he also addressed musician Kid Rock, who had performed at the RNC earlier that day. “You know, he does rallies, every time he performs, 35,000, 40,000 people come to see him,” Trump mused, to which a frustrated Colbert replied, “That’s called concerts!”

Colbert also showed a clip of Trump saying, “I’m here tonight to present a vision to the entire nation, to every citizen, young and old, man and woman, Democrat, Republican or Independent, black or white, Asian or Hispanic…”

Colbert continued the list: “…freaks or geeks, sharks or jets, innies or outies, tops or bottoms, paper or plastic, regular or extra crispy, Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, Simon or Garfunkel…”

“So there it is,” said the visibly exhausted moderator at the end of his monologue. “The longest speech ever. But they did it: they had a conference, they forced me to watch most of it, and I forced you to watch part of it. Please forgive me.”
