Police in South Africa and Queensland are searching for convicted child rapist Allan Hopkins after a suspected new serious sexual offense

SA Police are working with Queensland authorities to track down wanted man and convicted sex offender Allan Hopkins, who police say is facing new charges of aggravated sexual offense against a child under 18.

On Friday, Detective Superintendent Scott Fitzgerald said the 44-year-old was currently wanted over an alleged incident that occurred earlier this month.

In order to protect the alleged victim, the official was unable to go into further detail about the circumstances of the new allegations.

Detective Superintendent Fitzgerald said Mr Hopkins was spotted at a bottle shop in the eastern Adelaide suburbs earlier this month and then at a Millicent Pharmacy in the state’s southeast.

“On May 4, he was in Victoria and is currently wanted for allegedly fleeing a person intercepted on the side of the road,” Detective Superintendent Fitzgerald said.

He said two days later his vehicle was seen on the Barrier Highway in New South Wales.

“Subsequently, Hopkins is now wanted by police in Queensland for (alleged) offenses in that state – I believe the offenses are not of a sexual nature,” he said.

Mr Fitzgerald said police believed Mr Hopkins was currently in southeast Queensland and his current mode of transport was being investigated as his Mazda ute had been recovered in the region.

“Police are asking the public to contact police if they see Mr. Hopkins,” Detective Commissioner Fitzgerald said.

“Citizens are advised not to approach him and to call the police immediately.”

Mr. Hopkins was convicted in 2010

In 2010, Allan Hopkins was sentenced to seven years in prison for kidnapping a child from a home and raping her.

Hopkins had pleaded guilty to assault but was unable to give the court an explanation as to why he took the 10-year-old girl after breaking into her Paralowie home to steal a handbag.

He took the girl while she was sleeping next to a young friend, raped her and left her near a local schoolyard.

Detective Superintendent Fitzgerald said Mr Hopkins was not currently subject to an extended supervision order – but was being monitored under the state’s Child Sex Offender Registration Act, which police say he has now breached.

“If Allan sees (this) report, the message is for you to surrender to the nearest police station. This way we can safely arrest you and bring you before the court so that these matters can be heard,” he said.

“Once we have arrested him, regardless of his whereabouts, we will extradite him to South Australia to face the charges.”

The detective said police were in contact with and supporting his previous and current alleged victims.

Police described Mr. Hopkins as Caucasian, 185cm tall, of heavy build, with short brown hair, brown eyes and a skull tattoo on his upper right arm.
