ELGIN, Texas (KXAN) — One man is dead and another was arrested following an alleged road rage incident in Elgin Tuesday night, police said in a news release.

Elgin police said they responded to a disturbance and shooting call on U.S. Highway 290 and County Line Road around 7:08 p.m. Tuesday.

Police believe the situation began as an incident of aggression between the victim and another driver. Police said both exited their vehicles and got into an argument that escalated into a shootout.

Police found a man, later identified as Joseph Stanczyk, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, the EPD said.

Fabian Salas, 34, was arrested in the incident and charged with murder, police said.

According to an affidavit, as an officer handcuffed him, Salas said “he needs help” while looking at Stanczyk. The officer asked, “Who did this?” and Salas replied, “It was me.”

A witness reported to police that she saw two vehicles speeding and cutting each other off until they stopped at a red light at an intersection.

The witness told police that Stanczyk got out of his vehicle and walked toward Salas’ vehicle, whereupon Salas also got out. The two men then began fighting, according to the affidavit.

“Salas and the victim stopped fighting and (the witness) believed they exchanged words… Then (the witness) saw Salas pull out a gun and shoot the victim in the face,” the affidavit states.

As of Wednesday morning, no attorney was available for Salas. This article will be updated when that information becomes available and his attorney issues a statement on his behalf.
