World News LIVE: Quota protesters in Bangladesh demand nationwide lockdown amid clashes; India advises citizens to avoid travel

Student protesters in Bangladesh on Thursday demanded an end to public job quotas and called for a nationwide shutdown following deadly clashes this week that left six people dead and hundreds injured.

Shortly thereafter, India issued a warning urging its citizens to avoid travel to the neighboring country.

Angry at the high level of youth unemployment – out of a total population of 170 million people, almost 32 million are neither employed nor in school – the students are pushing for the abolition of the 30% quota of reservations for the families of freedom fighters.

“We will implement our plans for a complete closure. All facilities will remain closed,” protest coordinator Nahid Islam told Reuters.

“Only hospitals and emergency services remain operational, ambulance services are the only permitted means of transport.”
