Consumer alert over cannabis packaging targeting children in Ohio – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) is issuing a consumer alert about cannabis products with packaging that appeals to children.

According to the DCC, the products in question contain Delta-8-THC.

The warning comes on the heels of cease-and-desist notices issued this week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to five companies for imitating packaging and using foods popular with young people.

In recent months, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the DCC have issued warnings about the dangers posed by products containing delta-8 THC. Current Ohio law does not prevent its sale to Ohio residents, including children.

“As the department prepares to introduce non-medical cannabis products that meet our highest testing and safety standards, we must ensure that dangerous, unregulated products like Delta-8 are removed from circulation,” said DCC Superintendent Jim Canepa. “The packaging of these products can make them look exactly like candy and there are no testing requirements for the products themselves, leaving Ohio consumers, especially children, unable to know exactly what they are purchasing, which is extremely dangerous.”

The DCC does not currently regulate products containing delta-8 THC, but emphasizes the difference between these products and those regulated by the department that have met the standards.
