Tampa police officer arrested for domestic violence

A Tampa police officer has been placed on leave after being arrested for assault.

According to a Tampa Police press release, Cornelius Young was arrested off-duty Wednesday at a home in the 700 block of Cortaro Drive in Sun City.

According to police, an argument broke out between Young and a woman he knew, which escalated into physical violence and the woman suffered minor injuries.

“To say this is disappointing would be an understatement,” Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in the press release. “Our thoughts are with the victim involved. We are committed to transparency in our internal investigation. The allegations do not align with the mission of the Tampa Police Department.”

Young, who has been with the agency since November, was immediately “relieved of his duties,” police said.

“He will remain on leave pending the completion of the investigation into this incident,” the press release said.

Young’s booking information was not immediately available.
