91 Buffalo Bills Players in 91 Days: DE Kameron Cline

The Buffalo Bills utilize a heavy rotation on the defensive end. This places a greater emphasis on depth players. However, unlike the offensive line, the Bills typically do not place much emphasis on the versatility of the team’s defensive end players.

Sure, the Bills do some cross-training between one- and three-tech defensive tackles, but they don’t typically move their edge players inside. Sometimes they do it in obvious passing situations with some of their bigger defensive ends, but most of the time, the edge players stay outside.

That’s part of what makes the subject of today’s edition of “91 Players in 91 Days” so intriguing. He’s a defensive end, but he has the size to handle three-man duties in third-and-long situations. Can he make the 53-man roster this year?

Kameron Cline

  • Number: 96
  • Position: OF
  • Size weight: 1.93 m, 127 kg
  • Age: 26 (27 on 02/19/2025)
  • Experience/Draft: 1; signed with the Indianapolis Colts after the 2020 NFL Draft
  • College: South Dakota
  • Acquired: Claimed by the Bills after waivers on 05/05/2023

Financial situation (according to Spotrac): Cline signed a reserve/futures contract on Jan. 22 after Buffalo’s season ended. The two-year deal is worth a total of $1.954 million, with $9,000 guaranteed. If he is released, that guaranteed amount is what Buffalo will have to pay in salary cap charges. If he makes the roster, Cline will have a salary cap hit of $919,500 for the 2024 season.

2023 Recap: Cline spent the offseason and preseason with the Bills after spending the previous three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Cline appeared in all three of Buffalo’s preseason games and was extremely productive overall. He totaled five tackles, including one for loss, and added 1.5 sacks. However, he was not selected to the final roster and was released at the end of the preseason. He signed with Buffalo’s practice squad the day after his release.

At one point, Cline suffered an injury that forced the team to place him on practice squad injured reserve, which they did on November 7. He returned to the practice squad on December 28. Cline was not elevated off the practice squad at all during the regular season or playoffs.

Positional perspectives: Cline is one of 10 forwards competing for a roster spot. He is joined by Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa, Casey Toohill, Dawuane Smoot, Von Miller, Javon Solomon, David Ugwoegbu, Rondell Bothroyd and Kingsley Jonathan.

Off-season 2024: Cline is healthy and has participated in all offseason work. He is ready for training camp.

Outlook for the 2024 season: I don’t think Cline is a serious contender for a roster spot, but that doesn’t make me any less intrigued by his potential. He has some hybrid upside up front, and if he’s productive again in the preseason, that could make him a bit harder to crack onto the practice squad.

However, with Rousseau, Epenesa and Miller easily slotted into the roster, there are two roster spots left for the remaining players. Jonathan is clearly ahead of Cline in the coaching staff’s eyes, and I imagine Smoot and Solomon are as well. Cline is likely back on the practice squad barring an incredible training camp and preseason.
