Fire Breaks Out Near Historic Atlanta Eagle Bar and Kodak Store

A fire broke out in a block of historic buildings Wednesday morning in Ponce, just over a month after another blaze broke out in roughly the same location.

Fire officials say the fire appears to have broken out Thursday at what was once one of Atlanta’s most popular LGBTQ+ bars, as well as a historic Kodak building adjacent to the former bar.

The case began near 306 Ponce De Leon Avenue, which was the former site of the Atlanta Eagle bar, which became famous in the Southeast and “hosted legendary drag queens like RuPaul and Lady Bunny who promoted LGBTQ+ equality and HIV/AIDS education,” the mayor’s office said. The neighboring Kodak building, which still bears an iconic vintage sign above it, has existed in its current state since the 1950s.

11Alive photojournalist Jojo Johnson was on scene and captured images of smoke coming out from under the Kodak sign.

This is the second fire at the location in less than 50 days. Fire officials have not provided any information on how either fire started.
