Rainy weather provides some cooling

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: A weak cold front moving into the region from the north, together with a disturbance in the air, will lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon.

In some areas, the rain may continue long enough to drop temperatures to the low 30s. But there is an 80% chance of rain this afternoon, and at least the chance of rain will remain overnight.

Weekend outlook

No single day is expected to be a complete washout, but you’ll definitely want to have a “Plan B” ready if you’re planning on doing anything outdoors. Rain chances will be around 70-80% through the weekend, with heavy rainfall possible in some areas. The good news is that the heat will ease somewhat, with clouds and rain helping to keep highs above 30 degrees Celsius.

Expanded outlook

An upper-level low pressure system will settle over the central U.S. through next week, so the chance of rain in our forecast will continue to rise for the foreseeable future. Daily rain chances are 60-80% for the duration of our 10-day forecast. Again, clouds and precipitation should help keep temperatures slightly below normal most days.

Rainfall

While we can look forward to some relief from the oppressive heat we’ve experienced at times this summer, we need to keep an eye on precipitation amounts each day. The latest forecast from the Weather Prediction Center calls for most of our areas to see 3 to 6 inches of rain by next Thursday morning. And keep in mind, these are averages. Locally, higher amounts are entirely possible, if not likely.
