Man arrested after allegedly threatening to kill his mother

A Hot Springs man was arrested on felony charges Tuesday night after allegedly calling 911 and threatening to kill his 84-year-old mother.

John Scott Shiver, 60, of Terry Street, was arrested at his home shortly before 8 p.m. and charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, which is punishable by up to six years in prison.

Shiver was held on $2,500 bail and was scheduled to appear in Garland County District Court on Wednesday.

According to court records, he was convicted on July 12, 2011, of third-degree domestic violence (second offense) involving his mother and sentenced to five years probation. He was previously convicted of third-degree domestic violence on August 26, 2010. His probation was revoked on November 15, 2016, and he was sentenced to six years in prison. He also has three prior convictions for drunk driving.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hot Springs police officers Zach Rieves and Alex Tobar responded to the threats at the Terry Street apartment shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

En route, officers learned that a man named John Shiver had called 911 and said he wanted to kill his mother, and then hung up. Upon arrival, officers contacted Shiver’s mother, who also lives in the house. She stated that her son was inside and “he had been drinking.”

The mother went inside to get Shiver, but “came out quickly” and said Shiver again threatened to kill her and himself. Officers were trying to get the mother out of harm’s way when Shiver allegedly walked out.

Shiver allegedly refused to comply with officers’ orders and attempted to go back inside, but was arrested and taken into custody. The mother stated that she wanted to file a threatening complaint against Shiver, so he was taken into custody and booked into the Garland County Detention Center shortly before 10:30 p.m., where he remained in custody Wednesday.
